A Year of Mud, Magic, and Milestones

2024 was a year that threw everything at us – from the wettest growing season since 1947 (the ducks and wild swimmers were thrilled; Rob, not so much) to navigating the challenges and joys of running a family farm in a rapidly changing world. But with muddy boots, wonderful guests, and plenty of good stories to tell, we made it through. Celebrating 100 years as a working family farm was undoubtedly a highlight, reminding us of our roots and the incredible journey that brought us here.

Despite the weather’s best efforts to turn our fields into ponds, the crops (mostly) cooperated, and our animals remained stars of the show. Springtime saw the arrival of playful kid goats, delighting guests of all ages, and we’re crossing our fingers for Highland calves this summer. Visitors braved the elements to explore the Avebury World Heritage Site, celebrate hen weekends, gather for family reunions, bond on corporate away days, and find ultimate relaxation during yoga retreats.

The farm wasn’t just about the mud and animals – we are loving seeing it become a hub for calm, creativity and collaboration. Andy Mackenzie brought energy and breath to the fields with his inspiring Wim Hof workshops, while Georgie Weedon’s added bursts of color to the Art Shed. Briony Machin guided guests in crafting beautifully mosaic creations, blending tradition and artistry. Meanwhile, our workshops covered everything from solving Instagram mysteries with Kirsty from Rebuildagram to navigating PR dilemmas with the ever-insightful Priscilla from Top Trick.

Our luxury stables accommodation proved that countryside getaways can be anything but boring. Guests climbed walls (literally), snoozed in mezzanine bedrooms, and enjoyed local goodies in fully stocked kitchens – all surrounded by the warm interiors designed by Polly Ashman. From candlelit dinners to bouncy barn adventures, the farm has been a backdrop for unforgettable experiences.

Avebury’s Moment in the Spotlight

The Avebury profile has continued to rise, starting to shake off its “quieter cousin” status to Stonehenge. This year, Professor Alice Roberts brought her expertise to the area with Digging for Britain, while Charlie Cooper’s Myth Country highlighted the rich stories woven into our landscape. Publications like The Times and The British Travel Journal have written wonderful reviews of the farm, helping us share this magical corner of Wiltshire with an even wider audience.


Looking Ahead to 2025

As we squelch our way into 2025, we’re preparing for a year of fresh possibilities and seasonal surprises. Spring promises the return of our bottle fed lambs and maybe the odd kid goat, while summer will bring wildflower meadows and harvest madness. I think always think Autumn is all about harvest celebrations and toasted marshmallows on bonfires, but planting and the shooting season makes sure we are kept busy and Christmas will come around again before you can say ‘Kier Startmer the Farmer Harmer!’ (reference to previous post!!)
