FARM PRODUCE
We are passionate about our livestock and believe that they form an increasingly important part of our farming business, as they graze more marginal land and increase the fertility of our soils by returning organic matter back into the land.
Our cattle are majority Hereford and Angus breeds that mature slowly, laying down important intramuscular fat that makes for flavoursome, succulent beef. They spend most of the year grazing the water meadows at West Kennett before coming inside in the winter where to munch on a mixture of hay and crushed barley, grown on the farm.
All of our beef is matured for at least 30 days on the bone which gives it that melt-in-the-mouth texture and flavour.
Come winter, our sheep are fed stubble turnips, grown on the farm in between the Winter and Spring crops. This gives us excellent Spring hogget. We also bottle feed some orphan lambs from our friends, The Browns at Aldbourne that are then weaned in the orchard.
Our Oxford Sandy Black pigs are the farm’s newest residents and love being left to roam through the wood — their natural habitat. We have started making our own charcuterie and always have a variety of joints and sausages available to purchase, alongside our beef and lamb.
For the last few years, we have portioned off a small amount of our best oilseed rape which we use to create a versatile and flavoursome oil that we sell on the farm. The oil is gently pressed before being triple filtered to give a clean tasting oil with a high smoke point.
