Reflecting on the Farming March
A Day of Unity and Resilience
Last week, I took the girls to join fellow farmers in a march that highlighted the challenges and hopes within our industry. It was a grey, cold day—one of those that seem to settle deep into your bones. But the atmosphere was anything but bleak. There was a quiet sense of unity and shared purpose that warmed us all, even against the chill.
Farming is more than a job; it's a way of life. For us, this has been true for four generations. This year marks our 100th year as a working family farm, a milestone that connects us to a rich heritage while also demanding that we look forward. Participating in the march was a reminder of that connection—standing alongside others who understand the daily joys and struggles of growing food, nurturing animals, and stewarding the land.
Politics and policy discussions have been dominating headlines, and the issues facing farming are complex. At The Farm at Avebury, we believe in a balanced approach. We understand the need to preserve traditions while embracing innovation, and to sustain both the land and livelihoods. The march wasn't about taking extreme stances but about ensuring that the voices of those who care for the land are heard and valued.
We returned home from the march feeling uplifted, grateful for our community, and hopeful that by working together, we can shape a future where farming continues to thrive—not just for us, but for generations to come.
